In der nordenglischen Stadt Leeds kam es in der Nacht zu Ausschreitungen. Ein Polizeiauto wurde umgeworfen, mehrere Autos und ein Linienbus angezündet.
Die Ausschreitungen begannen nach Angaben der Polizei mit einer Ansammlung von Jugendlichen in einem Einkaufszentrum. Die Jugendlichen warfen Feuerwerkskörper und Steine auf die Polizei und griffen Beamte an.
Die Polizei konnte die Lage zunächst nicht unter Kontrolle bringen und forderte Verstärkung an. Bei den Ausschreitungen wurden mehrere Menschen verletzt, darunter ein Polizist.
Ersten Ermittlungen zufolge seien die Unruhen von einer kriminellen Minderheit angezettelt worden. Die Polizei sucht nun nach den Verantwortlichen.
Die Ausschreitungen in Leeds sind ein weiterer Beleg für die wachsende Gewaltbereitschaft in England. In den letzten Monaten kam es immer wieder zu Ausschreitungen in verschiedenen Städten des Landes.
