Austria: Greens and Conservatives Agree on Coalition Government
After weeks of negotiations, the Greens and the conservative Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) have reached an agreement to form a coalition government.
The Greens, led by Werner Kogler, had been languishing in the polls until Kogler took over as party leader in 2017. Kogler's leadership has been credited with revitalizing the party and bringing it back to prominence.
The ÖVP, led by Sebastian Kurz, is the largest party in the Austrian parliament. Kurz has been a controversial figure, but he is also seen as a strong leader who can get things done.
The Greens and the ÖVP have very different policies on many issues, but they have agreed to work together on a common platform that includes protecting the environment, reducing immigration, and reforming the tax system.
The new coalition government is expected to be sworn in on January 7, 2020. It will be the first time that the Greens have been part of the Austrian government.
